Sustainable Small Businesses to Support

In honor of Earth Day, BVA would like to highlight some of the Start Small Think Big organizations that have sustainability in mind.

Earth Day is an annual holiday aimed to highlight the importance of environmental protection. BVA would like to take this opportunity to show support for small businesses who focus on protecting the planet with sustainable products and services.

In this article, you'll find a range of sustainable small businesses that we can support as consumers to benefit both small businesses and the environment.

1. Small Town Cultures

"We are a family-based fermentation company located in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. About a decade ago I found myself chronically ill with an autoimmune disease. A myriad of medications and intolerable side effects ensued, there had to be a better way. Wild fermentation and a deeper understanding of the gut biome held the key. I am no longer sick and am constantly wowed by the powerful unseen world of probiotic microbes."

2. Don Carvajal Cafe

“I was raised between my grandfather’s farm in the Dominican Republic and New York City. In DR, I witnessed how modern technology has made farmers steer away from traditional farming practices— the use of additives, pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals has increased. Living in New York City I’ve noticed that the demand for healthy food options and ethical/sustainable business practices has greatly increased. People want companies that care and I don’t think that that is a hard demand to comply with. That is why I decided to create Don Carvajal Café. I want to change the way Coffee, in both its production and distribution, is perceived by strategically working against unethical practices that lead to deforestation, chemical runoff, and child labor— some of the very things coffee production is known for.” - Hector Castillo Carvajal, Founder

6. Smooth Pops

"I was inspired to create an all-natural fruit pop after mistakenly giving my son a Fla Vor Ice freezer pop when he was 6 months old, until I looked at the ingredients and found that it was made of sugar water, dyes and a whole lot of artificial stuff I couldn't pronounce.I just wanted simple natural ingredients, whole fruit to retain the most nutritional value, fresh ripe fruit for a bold fruit smoothie taste, and all blended into a convenient mess-free and portion-controlled tube packaging. So that's when I founded Smooth Pops along with my son, Rock, who is now our CTO - Chief Tasting Officer. Enjoy a refreshing Smooth Pop from my kitchen to yours!"

Our vision is simple, to rescue ancestral food practices and the use of clean ingredients by offering alternative protein snacks based on farmed edible insects and native American ingredients. Don Bugito's inspiration comes directly from my cultural heritage. Growing up in Mexico exposed me to the culturally rich traditions of eating edible insects and their use as “power foods”.
